What a Marvel

Tonight, UK fans of Marvel’s ‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’ finally uncovered the truth about the mysterious Cellist (and discovered she looked a lot like Amy Acker – yay!) but, after all the shocks and surprises as Whedon and his team lead to an end-of-season climax, it’s reassuring to find out today that Coulson’s team is getting a second series.

Yep, despite the ratings dip that has followed the sterling season opener, the Marvel brand holds a lot of weight and luckily the TV spin-off is getting another run – bucking the curse of Whedon’s ‘Firefly’ and ‘Dollhouse’ for now.

Not only that, but Marvel continues its transition to the small screen with the newly announced ‘Agent Carter’ which, following Hayley Atwell’s character revival in the ‘Captain America’ sequel and a short that accompanied ‘Iron Man 3’, has been picked up for a series that will follow Cap’s former ass-kicking love.

So, with Phase 2 of the Marvel legacy soon to close, exciting times are ahead – and not just in the cinema. Overkill could be a danger here, but so far Kevin Feige and his team have hardly put a foot wrong (although I still haven’t seen Norton’s pre-Ruffalo ‘Hulk’) so hopes are high. What a Marvel!

Shields Up for Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

With ‘Dexter’ spilling its final bloodshed and ‘Breaking Bad’ heading for a combustible finish next week, cult TV fans are likely chomping at the bit for a new obsession.

It may be lighter and shinier, but ‘Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’ is a good bet – and is unlikely to get a short-shrift early cancellation after debuting on ABC with the strongest ratings for a US drama in nearly four years.

Joss Whedon’s hot new property, following the exploits of supposedly deceased Agent Coulson and his fellow superhero shepherds, has done something unexpected following Whedon’s former glories that were all brilliant but, ‘Buffy’ aside, largely unwatched: it’s attracted viewers!

Of course, there was no doubting a Marvel TV show was going to do well following the mega-bucks earnings of its cinematic canon, so now us UK viewers can relax ahead of the C4 premiere tomorrow night knowing full well that it will at least get a full season.
