Slayer vs Scream

Knockdown dragout time! ‘Celebrity Deathmatch’ WHOM?! Thunderdome ain’t got nothing on this fight of the century…

Yep, as I dip once more into the dangerously addictive world of Funko Pop! Vinyl figures, I end up with a bloody fight to the death on my hands.

buffy vs ghostface
In one corner, we have the homicidal maniac known as ‘Ghostface’, a killer of teens who enjoys scary movies and offing Drew Barrymore in the first 10 minutes. And his nemesis? Sunnydale’s saviour and everybody’s favourite blonde Slayer (Faith was pretty cool, no?), Buffy Summers and her trusty Mr Pointy.

Who will win? It’s gotta be the Buffster right? The girl power is strong in this one – plus payback’s a bitch and SMG already suffered at the hands of the scary masked serial slasher in ‘Scream 2’. Remember?

RIP Cici 'Scream 2'
Place yer bets! I feel like this could become a weekly thing – if only I had enough money for more cute but pointless figures, hmm?

Blue Monday, Little Green Men

Ah, January. Part of me feels you get a bad rap, part of me feels your detractors are fully justified in their hatred. Today is unofficially known as ‘Blue Monday’, the flip to Black Friday’s intoxicating blend of impulse sale buys and retail-based violence; what that means is we’re all poor, we’re all housebound, and we can’t see the impending summer through the SAD-inflicting pitch blackness of 2015’s cold snap start and bare, bare trees. Heck, if you were to look at this very blog, you’d guess Blue Monday got an early start, such is the lazy fugue state I’ve been occupying since the bell tolled midnight on Jan 1st. Write for pleasure? Pfft, there’s boxsets and leftover chocolates to gorge on. Chance is I might have been confused as one of these Smurf wannabes in the past coupla weeks.

blue myself january

But it’s not all bad. The Starks and co. would have you believe winter is coming (and that overblown fantasy saga happens to be back in April if that’s your bag o’ dragons) but the sun will shine on us once again. Case in point? On this very blue day, mere months after the Lynch legion were given an early Xmas prezzie in the shape of promised new ‘Twin Peaks’ episodes, Fox have confirmed they are intent on opening up ‘The X-Files’ once again.

mulder and scully

OMG!! That stands for Oh My Gillian btw, seeing as this tentative announcement is not merely pointing to a rebooted recast remake, but has creative minds hoping for a reunion between Duchovny and Anderson as the original. Now, the second movie in 2008 was lacklustre – and, before we start seeking the truth that is out there all over again, remember this is still rumour mill stage – but this could be up there with new ‘Jurassic Park’ and aforementioned ‘Twin Peaks’ (still never seen ‘Star Wars’ so can’t comment there) as a nostalgia nuke to get excited about. Push the button, Chris Carter and TV-land people!

All together now…

Bow Ties? Cool. Scarves? Cooler.

It’s December, so the Christmas countdown has started – and, speaking of time, here’s a nifty gift idea for the Doctor Who fan in your family or circle of friends.

Take a TARDIS and flash forward to December 25th, to the moment when that special Whovian in your life opens their perfectly wrapped Christmas prezzy to uncover a replica Doc Who scarf to keep them warm throughout the rest of winter. Sure, bow ties are cool but a lovingly crafted replica of your fave Time Lord’s nifty neckwear? Geronimo!

The kind folk over at Lovarzi, accessory specialists who’ve pretty much nailed a range of geek-chic Doctor Who knitwear (not to mention a Sherlock collection that Cumberbatch himself would be happy to investigate), were generous enough to send me my very own 4th Doctor replica scarf, which dedicated fans may recognise as the type worn by DW legend Tom Baker.

It’s priced at £49.99 but, given that it’s a pretty substantial size (opening up to 13ft/4m long), it’s worth every penny. The officially licensed scarf is a perfect treat for hardcore fans and cosplayers, but even occasional Who watchers (or even complete newbies) may find themselves enamoured by the blend of warm autumnal colours: yellow, purple, green, burgundy red. So, while it may be recognised as an iconic scarf to Who fans passing by, you could just as happily wear it for comfort and style regardless of your allegiance (or non-allegiance) – the only thing giving its true identity away is a label inside, which you’d have to get pretty up close to in order to clarify its official Who status.

To buy your very own decorative scarf, or to browse the official BBC Doctor Who and Sherlock collections, head over to the Lovarzi website and keep up-to-date on Twitter. After all, it’s pretty cold out there in space and time – best to wrap up!

Pop a Stake in Monday

Poor Monday, the bastard child of days of the week. It never asked to be hated, but it can’t help but inspire dread and despair in millions. If Saturday is the popular girl everyone wants to know, Monday is the geeky bullied kid in the corner who smells like cheese, quietly plotting to do a Steve Jobs and take over the world.

McGeek makes it his mission to pick you up this Monday, by putting a stake in the heart of its crappiness. Do you all remember that blonde chick called Buffy who killed dead things, swapped spit with brooding vamps and generally saved the world a lot? Well, thanks to the mad bad geniuses at Funko POP! Vinyl, the time has come to take Buff and her Scooby Gang home in fab figure form.

buffy the vampire slayer

Forbidden Planet UK has them marked on its website as ‘expected 30th September’ with other sites showing later in October; regardless of date though, surely it’s a no-brainer for any Whedonite to put a pre-order in and start making room for their own Sunnydale shelf.

Who cares if the Gentlemen didn’t have red eyes? What of it that poor Xander has been blatantly ignored? This is one of the best things to happen in toyland for years, and I’m not too proud to admit that I’m going to buy all in the hope that they do a ‘Toy Story’ and come to life when I’m not looking, ready to re-enact my favourite episodes. Dear Santa…

Dead Mouse

Ever wondered what ‘Die Hard’ would have been like if it was set in Disneyland? Well, thanks to recently published graphic novel ‘Ricky Rouse Has a Gun’, you no longer have to. Sorta.

This rip-roaring yarn is a deviant little book – in all the best ways. Jörg Tittel and John Aggs have crafted a satirical story with bite in it’s hero’s mousey teeth: not to mention gunfire and bloodshed in abundance. Despite its central character’s, erm, resemblance to a famous mouse, this is definitely not bedtime reading for kids.

ricky rouse graphic novel

So, what’s the story? Down-on-his-luck soldier Rick is lying low in Shanghai when he crosses paths with Hucheng, an entrepreneur who owns a Chinese theme park that is decidedly similar to the US’s most culturally significant amusement parks. Out of the job and desperate to support his estranged daughter, Rick becomes ‘Ricky Rouse’ and joins the park’s existing staff, all of whom are versions of some of the world’s most familiar fictional characters.

However, when a rogue band of costumed creeps take the theme park hostage on Christmas Day, Ricky Rouse has to come to the aid of both its patrons and his visiting family. Cue bullets and ultra-violence – happy Christmas!

As well as sly political undertones regarding Western-Chinese relations, the commentary on attitudes to political property is defiantly on-the-nose. Above all though, it’s a fun romp with a wicked streak of anarchic humour, Tittel’s snarky dialogue backed up by Aggs’s blood-soaked, rampaging visuals.

Is it a bird? Is it a plane?

No, it’s a super-frickin’ awesome Superman poster courtesy of the very talented Brian C. Roll (he of the genre art haven that is Odyssey Art).

Remember my post a couple of weeks back? Well, the superman behind art prints celebrating genre icons from Sherlock to Buffy, Marty McFly to Miss Piggy has been kind enough to donate a 24”x 36” Superman ‘Go Forward’ poster to one lucky winner who enters the latest Nice to Geek You giveaway.

Post-Comic Con Recon

So, now the geek dust has settled and San Diego costume shops have had their supply of superhero capes returned, it’s (perhaps past) time to reflect on the year’s biggest annual genre convention.

While there was nothing quite as awesome as last year’s impromptu Loki cosplay from Loki himself, Tom Hiddleston, there were some rather exciting announcements. Because I love lists – damn you, Buzzfeed! – here are the 15 things to emerge from SDCC ’14 that your McGeek is most excited about:

avengers 2

1. The new ‘Age of Ultron’ info, headed up by the insane poster above, is super news for fans of those super-sorts, The Avengers. Whedon, Downey, exciting new baddies – is it April 2015 yet?

2. Next year’s other Bigger-than-Big superhero team-up, ‘Batman Vs Superman: Dawn of Justice’ revealed its feminine charms with shots of Gal Gadot in her Wonder Woman cozzy. Wouldn’t it be funny if she kicks both their asses?!

3. The ‘Warcraft’ trailer. Never played it, doubt I ever will – but looks pretty epic!

4. Following its glowing reviews and major box office, it was announced that ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ is getting a sequel. Not too bad for a Marvel-lous gamble featuring a talking tree, huh?

5. Speaking of sequels, Gareth Edwards gets to play with his monster toybox some more with a second ‘Godzilla’ movie. After the somewhat muted reception to this year’s San Francisco-set rampage, maybe Edwards will deliver the monster movie to rule – and smash – all other monster movies with his second Godzilla outing.

6. Here’s some more sequel news for you – or sorta-sequel prequel news, anyway. King Kong’s prehistoric island home will be a destination for summer cinema audiences soon with a newly announced trip back to ‘Skull Island’. Joe Cornish is in the frame to direct.

7. Oh, and Christopher Nolan unveiled a new trailer for ‘Interstellar’. Thinkings, space travellers?

8. Summer means an impending new season of TV, so many of our favourites were in the frame. ‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D’ happily gets a second season despite a tail-off in viewership, so with that we get rumours of new characters like super agent Mockingbird as well as new cast members, including Lucy Lawless and ‘Dollhouse’s Reed Diamond.

9. Keeping it Marvel, an interesting expansion of the property’s TV portfolio comes with a rebooted ‘Daredevil’ for can-do-no-wrong Netflix. Will the platform’s creative freedom allow for the edgy, dark incarnation that the Ben Affleck vehicle so sadly wasn’t??

10. Didn’t think Homer would ever meet Peter Griffin? Erm…

homer meets peter griffin

11. Still reeling from the second season finale of ‘Hannibal?’ The third course will be set a year after that shocking bloodbath – and, as a Bryan Fuller buff and avid fan of the show, I can’t wait to see who lives, who dies and what the cannibal concocts next. The Red Dragon himself, Francis Dolarhyde, is set to make an appearance. Nightmares at the ready.

12. TV/game crossovers can be tricky to get right (‘Defiance’ anyone?) but the news that the cast of ‘Firefly’ are reuniting for a new online game is just, well, SHINY. She keeps on flying… *happy sigh*

13. Sam Raimi, in attendance to announce ‘The Last of Us’ film adap, also teased a possible new ‘Evil Dead’ series with Bruce Campbell also possibly involved. Can post-watershed handle this?

14. Horror buffs can also look forward to a return-to-form Guillermo del Toro, who takes a pause from pitting robots against giant monsters to deliver in ‘Crimson Peak’ the type of elegant, scary-as-hell pic with which he first made his name. Jeepers creepers.

15. Finally, Christmas soon which means mince pies, Santa and one big ol’ present in the final (for now) trip to Middle-earth for Peter Jackson’s ‘Hobbit’ trilogy. Sniff.

Until next year! Someone buy me a ticket??

Art On a Roll

When pop meets culture, you get heroically good art work like that created by Brian C. Roll. The New Jersey artist and all-round creative brain may not have prints from his portfolio hanging in The Louvre but, if you register even just a #1 on the geek-o-meter, you’ll agree that this guy’s skills are super – just like his subjects!

Brian’s Odyssey Art site collects together his ‘who’s who’ gallery of pop culture icons, many of whom will be familiar to all you genre junkies, but all in his own unique artistic style.

Thinking about doing some interior decorating? Luckily for those of us who don’t have his skill with a line, some of Roll’s most eye-catching work (including the Serenity crew above) can be bought from his online store.

And that’s not all. As his interpretations of classic pop culture heroes would suggest, Roll has a distinct eye for character and his very own good and bad guys will be discovered soon when his forthcoming Kickstarter-funded project ‘The Circle’ comes full circle. Can’t wait!
