Slayer vs Scream

Knockdown dragout time! ‘Celebrity Deathmatch’ WHOM?! Thunderdome ain’t got nothing on this fight of the century…

Yep, as I dip once more into the dangerously addictive world of Funko Pop! Vinyl figures, I end up with a bloody fight to the death on my hands.

buffy vs ghostface
In one corner, we have the homicidal maniac known as ‘Ghostface’, a killer of teens who enjoys scary movies and offing Drew Barrymore in the first 10 minutes. And his nemesis? Sunnydale’s saviour and everybody’s favourite blonde Slayer (Faith was pretty cool, no?), Buffy Summers and her trusty Mr Pointy.

Who will win? It’s gotta be the Buffster right? The girl power is strong in this one – plus payback’s a bitch and SMG already suffered at the hands of the scary masked serial slasher in ‘Scream 2’. Remember?

RIP Cici 'Scream 2'
Place yer bets! I feel like this could become a weekly thing – if only I had enough money for more cute but pointless figures, hmm?

Pop a Stake in Monday

Poor Monday, the bastard child of days of the week. It never asked to be hated, but it can’t help but inspire dread and despair in millions. If Saturday is the popular girl everyone wants to know, Monday is the geeky bullied kid in the corner who smells like cheese, quietly plotting to do a Steve Jobs and take over the world.

McGeek makes it his mission to pick you up this Monday, by putting a stake in the heart of its crappiness. Do you all remember that blonde chick called Buffy who killed dead things, swapped spit with brooding vamps and generally saved the world a lot? Well, thanks to the mad bad geniuses at Funko POP! Vinyl, the time has come to take Buff and her Scooby Gang home in fab figure form.

Forbidden Planet UK has them marked on its website as ‘expected 30th September’ with other sites showing later in October; regardless of date though, surely it’s a no-brainer for any Whedonite to put a pre-order in and start making room for their own Sunnydale shelf.

Who cares if the Gentlemen didn’t have red eyes? What of it that poor Xander has been blatantly ignored? This is one of the best things to happen in toyland for years, and I’m not too proud to admit that I’m going to buy all in the hope that they do a ‘Toy Story’ and come to life when I’m not looking, ready to re-enact my favourite episodes. Dear Santa…

Making Time For Mickey

One of the things I did on my geek sorta-sabbatical was, well, pretty geeky.

After a period in my teens where I passed off all my VHS tapes to cousins and pretending I wasn’t cray-cray for cartoons, I’ve fully embraced my love of Disney once again. Of course, the Pixar catalogue has been a gateway drug leading backwards into the classic canon, and though not without some shabby entries (‘Oliver’s Company’, I’m looking at you) the Walt wonder years are not to be snubbed by any serious film fan – or eternal kid.

Because the Blu/DVD library and Disney Infinity figures aren’t enough, I took time out (guffaw) from my busy schedule to buy a Mickey Mouse watch from Ingersoll watches.

Ingersoll Mickey Mouse watch

It’s just one of many timepieces starring the world’s most famous mouse, but the large dial and stainless steel bracelet meant this one won prime real estate on my hairy wrist. Everybody’s favourite Sorcerer’s Apprentice looks like he’s having fun telling me what time it is, dontcha think?

If you’re geared towards Goofy or would rather spend your time with a dwarf or evil queen, you’ll be happy to hear that Ingersoll have a Disney watches collection that I really wish I hadn’t seen because I now want all of them. Rolex has never been this much fun!

Spiky Art From Canime

There were a number of exhibitors at the recent Birmingham MCM Comic-Con that piqued my interest, but one stand stood out with its eye-catching output.

Canime is a UK-based independent design and print business that specialises in anime canvas art. The cooler-than-cool canvases showcase iconic characters from your favourite anime properties, and anime-ignorant pop culture fans can pick up wall art inspired by everything from Ghibli to ‘Breaking Bad’ and all the way back to Middle Earth.

The supremely kind folks at Canime were kind enough to send me a Cowboy Bebop canvas, featuring the character Spike from the 1998 anime series. The pictures below don’t do justice what is a real knockout piece, the shadowy smoking outline giving off a decidedly noir-esque vibe despite the bold blue background making it as Pop Art colourful as it is cool.

It’s available here for £30, and you can also get your hands on the rest of the Cowboy Bebop gang from the Canime site. Have a browse and start making major makeover plans – your walls need never be boring again!

Twin Peaks Toys

Ever wanted a Log Lady action figure? After last week’s Buffy lego revelation, then perhaps the idea is not too far-fetched.

Indeed, thanks to artist and loyal Lynch fan Max Dalton, any action figure manufacturer thinking about a Twin Peaks set would simply have to get hold of his new wall art for some inspiration.

This 18″ by 24″ hand numbered print is a must for anyone ‘wild at heart’ for Dale Cooper and the inhabitants of the spooky titular town – get it now at Spoke Art before the initial run of 500 is gone, and start imagining how different (and freakier) your childhood would have been if these toys had existed and replaced your Jurassic Park and Power Rangers lot.
